What's new at the Springdale Public Library?

The Springdale Public Library (SPL) is excited to announce new technology upgrades and services in fall of 2018. SPL is focused on offering better quality service to our patrons through new databases, upgraded technology and equipment, S.T.E.A.M. -related activities for all ages, and educational and entertaining programs. S.T.E.A.M. stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math."

During the first week of September, the Library upgraded its network equipment, replacing several outdated network switches and moving all network hardware into new server racks. As a result, the Library’s public and staff network will be more stable, flexible, and easy to manage, and hardware will be more secure.

The Library has also begun preparations for replacing its automatic book return machine and sorter. Patrons and staff will enjoy a faster, quieter, and more reliable automatic check-in experience. Later in the fall, the Library will upgrade its self-service checkout stations as well with new hardware and software, with more features and improved user experience. Additionally, patrons will be able to pay library fines with credit cards at the new self-check kiosks, giving patrons a private and convenient payment option for keeping their accounts in good standing.

Patrons can also go online and browse our newest downloadable service, Hoopla. Hoopla is an innovative digital media service that allows you to borrow movies, music, audioBooks, eBooks, comics and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone - and even your Internet-enabled TV! With no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment later. We have hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, with more being added daily.

SPL is also introducing Maker Boxes. Maker Boxes are S.T.E.A.M.-related activity boxes with fun activities for any age. Learn how to use a button maker, make origami, learn different handwriting styles and more! Boxes are available at the Reference Desk and can be used in the Library.

On top of all these exciting new upgrades, the Library is now offering automatic renewals for Springdale Public Library patrons. Eligible Library materials renew automatically two days before items are due. The renewal loan period will extend from the original due date. Most Springdale Public Library items may be renewed up to two times.

The following are not eligible for auto-renewal:

• Items that have reached their renewal limit
• Items another customer has requested to borrow (items on hold)
• Items from other Washington County Library System branches
• ILL items (special items borrowed from a library out of our system)

You may also renew materials in person, by phone at 479-750-8180, or online at www.springdalelibrary.org.

The Library is located at 405 S. Pleasant St. and offers faxing, scanning, and printing services, free notary public service, and free public computer access and Wi-Fi. Library cards are available at no cost to anyone living, working, or going to school in Washington County.
