02/02/2009 - Warning about Fraudulent Repairs

Recently, the City of Springdale was hit very hard with winter storm damage resulting in downed power lines and tree limbs. This can present opportunities for out of town clean-up crews. The Springdale Police Department would like to remind all citizens to exercise caution when selecting and paying for these services. All companies operating in the City of Springdale must possess a business license. The following is a list of suggestions to consider before selecting a company or repairman:

  • Research the company you are considering and deal only with reputable firms.
  • Ask and check for references.
  • Insure that the firm has a business license and is bonded and insured.
  • Ask for a written agreement and don't pay in advance.

Citizens should use extra caution when dealing with repairmen or companies exhibiting any of the following:

  • Uninvited telephone or personal contact.
  • Informing citizens of things needing repair "immediately".
  • Deliberately talking too fast or pushing for a signature to get a discount only available that day.
  • Offer to use a home as a "display home".

For more information, please call the Springdale Police Department at 756-8200.
