Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

The Springdale Police Department adopted the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design concept in July of 2006 under the direction of police chief Kathy O'Kelley.  Law enforcement officers are specially trained in CPTED and work with the Springdale Planning Department as well as architects and other city officials to help ensure the proper design of structures, schools, and neighborhoods.  Officers are trained to know how the design and use of the environment can control human / criminal behavior and help reduce the fear of crime.  By understanding crime prevention through natural means such as design for natural surveillance and access control it will help decrease the opportunity for crime to happen.

The Springdale Police Department takes pride in the city it protects and with the proper design and effective use of the built environment it can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime and help improve the quality of life for citizens in Springdale.  The Springdale Police Department also offers CPTED Surveys that can be completed by a CPTED Officer for any residential home or commercial building that is already built to make suggestions to help with crime prevention.  Once the survey is complete the CPTED Officer will meet with the person and go over the results.

If you are interested in a CPTED Survey being completed on your home or business contact Sgt. Billy Turnbough at the Springdale Police Department at 479-750-8139 or bturnbough@springdaleark.org

GRAFFITI

WHY DOES GRAFFITI EXIST?

Gangs use graffiti in an attempt to intimidate other gangs or members of our community.
Gangs also use graffiti to advertise its name, its territory, and members names.
Graffiti is NOT an artistic expression.  It is malicious destruction of property and contributes to other crimes.

HOW DOES GRAFFITI AFFECT A NEIGHBORHOOD?

It leads to overall psychological and physical decline of neighborhoods.
Graffiti is vandalism and destruction of property that costs the city and people money.
If graffiti is not removed, gang members will interpret this as a sign of low neighborhood pride and they will assume they can control the neighborhood.
Graffiti will assist in the decline of property values.

REMOVAL OF GRAFFITI

1) Contact your local police department to report the crime.
2) Once the police are notified, they will open an investigation and gather INTEL.
3) Remove the graffiti from your property as quickly as you can. Recommended time is within 72 hrs from the time you notify the police.

NOTE:  If you have circumstances that prevent you from removing the graffiti contact Sgt. Billy Turnbough at the police department for assistance or you can email him at bturnbough@springdaleark.org .  Contact information is (479) 750-8139.

GRAFFITI PREVENTION TIPS

For concrete walls, consider growing vines or ivy to cover the wall.
Use dark paint on walled surfaces, graffiti does not show well against dark backgrounds.
Plant prickly or spiny shrubs adjacent to walls to discourage access.
Use graffiti-resistant coatings and protectants on exterior surfaces.
Install security cameras.
