Artifact of the Month

L. O. Stapleton of Springdale made this dulcimer for his daughter Linda in 1980. He dubbed the style as “Ozarkian Weeping Heart.”

“Stape,” as he was known to friends and family, made over 300 dulcimers, guitars, and other stringed instruments in the 1970s and 1980s out of his Springdale business, The Hillbilly Dulcimer Shop.

The donor of this dulcimer, Bob Madison, will conduct a dulcimer workshop here on Saturday, November 6, at 10:00 a.m. Bob will discuss dulcimer origins, repertoire, and migration to Arkansas. Participants will have an opportunity to learn the noter and drone style of playing.

If you enjoy music--dulcimer or otherwise--don't miss The Music of Our Lives, our exhibit exploring the role music has played in the everyday lives of folks in the Arkansas Ozarks. The exhibit opens October 4 and will be on view through March 26, 2011.
