Between 1923 and 1986, 101 tornadoes struck the six counties which make up Northwest Arkansas.  Benton County led the way with 31 twisters, followed by Washington County with 28.  Carroll County had the most deaths, with 65 recorded between 1816 and 1986.

Tornadoes and high winds aren’t the only storms that cause damage.  Snow and ice can also wreak havoc, as many area residents today will remember for years to come.

“Here lay a dead chicken completely stripped of the clothing nature designed for it; here a portion of baby’s clothing, there the arm of the family rocking chair…”

“We couldn’t see anything…but above the noise and din of the storm we could hear screams from every direction.  People were pleading for help.”
